“We will protect Medicare not just for the next election but for the next generation, and so that not only will your mom and dad and grandparents be able to use it, but you and I will be able to use it, and our children and their children. I think that is very important. I think this is all part of commonsense government. We need common sense in public policy, we need common sense in spending, and we need common sense in health care policy, and one of the issues that we have thought--we hope we are on the eve of a breakthrough in the budget. The gentleman from Connecticut [Mr. Shays] had mentioned earlier tonight, as a distinguished member of the Committee on the Budget, that negotiations have been going on since January on the budget to try to craft a bipartisan agreement so that we can save the fiscal character of our Government for the generations to come, long after the three of us have left Congress.”
