“I believe in my soul that the President of the United States does, in fact, want a bill to protect patients. I do not have any doubt about it. He has told me that on many occasions, all the way back to governor. I also respect the office of the Presidency, and I believe that unless we get his signature, we are going to be continuing to do the same thing that we have done now for 6 years. This is not just about passing a bill. This is about changing the law of the land so patients can be protected in a health care system that has radically changed over the last 30 years. I make no apologies to any of my colleagues. I think my colleagues know pretty well where I come from on this issue. I have great affection and respect for the gentleman from Iowa (Mr. Ganske) and the gentleman from Michigan (Mr. Dingell) and the gentleman from Arizona (Mr. Berry). I basically support the bill. Why in the world would I not? I helped write the bill. I am not against that bill at all. What I am against is not having a change in the law.”
