As ranking member of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, I have been particularly focused on the humanitarian challenges stemming from the complex crises in the region, in particular, Syria.

Iran still remains a global leader in terrorism financing and human rights abuses.

This hearing serves as an important reminder that even beyond the dangerous and illicit program Iran's regime routinely violates human rights of the Iranian people.

We must continue to advocate for help in Bob's case and for the release of the other American citizens unjustly held in Iran.

My question is, is this how the new Republican Congress treats people who report to work every day to protect our country?

They are holding DHS funds hostage. Their demand? That we mandate the deportation of thousands of students and young people who arrived here illegally as small children.

Either negotiations will succeed... or we are going to have to figure out how to deal with Iran's other despicable behavior.

I implore you to continue to turn up the pressure.

I happen to believe that the President's Executive orders on immigration are constitutional, but I also understand that some of my colleagues disagree.

It is a fact universally that most cases settle.

It is really frustrating... to learn that last year's U.N. appeal was only 50 percent funded.

I want to thank the chairman for starting this Congress with a hearing specifically focused on the humanitarian aspect of the Syrian conflict.
