Chris Coons is a United States Senator from Delaware, serving since 2010. A member of the Democratic Party, Coons has been involved in various Senate committees, focusing on issues such as foreign relations, judiciary matters, and small business. He is known for his advocacy on topics including military policy and legal transparency in government actions. Coons has also been active in promoting bipartisan efforts in the Senate.
The one challenge here is sustaining support for America's use of diplomatic and developmental resources around the world.
That is something that has been very hotly contested here in Congress just in the past year.
What I think is so terrific about being here today is that this is truly one subject matter that both sides not only agree on, but have actively worked hard on.
We cannot allow under our watch another Darfur humanitarian crisis to emerge in this same region of the world.
I think we should continue to invest 1 percent of America's total budget in making sure that we have got the resources to be an effective voice for justice and for progress in these parts of the world.
Later today, Senator Isakson and I, as the chair and ranking minority on the Africa Subcommittee, will be joined by Senators Durbin and Wicker in introducing a resolution for consideration by the Senate.
I would like to thank Special Envoy Lyman and Assistant Administrator Lindborg for your testimony and for your very hard work in this area.
We are not going to fund every idea, but we do want to engage the power of American innovation and the power of American research institutions and universities to really change what is possible in development.
I would like to join Senator Cardin and Senator Lugar in opening by expressing my regret at the passing of Congressman Donald Payne.
