the battle is about to begin. In one corner, the challenger: the American taxpayer. In the other corner, the undisputed champion of big government: the Democrat congressional leadership. At stake is fiscal responsibility. A betting man might give the odds to the taxpayers. After all, tens of millions of Americans are standing firm in support of a balanced budget. But their opposition, the Washington Democrat establishment, is not to be taken lightly. They will defend the status quo to the last breath. Mr. Speaker, the special interests will be ready. The Democrat leadership will be entrenched, but congressional supporters of a balanced budget amendment will have the taxpayers on their side, and this is one battle the taxpayers cannot afford to lose.
