Mr. Chairman, the people in this country will not believe what they are hearing tonight, that this amendment will allow thousands of dedicated Head Start teachers to be fired for no other reason than religious prejudice. Our amendment will reinstate the fundamental American protections against religious discrimination in employment. It will protect the jobs of thousands of Head Start teachers and the stability of children and families in Head Start programs. Voting for this amendment means that my colleagues are voting against religious discrimination. Why would anyone do otherwise?
