I rise tonight in great sadness. It's the run-up to the fall elections, and what has the Republican Majority pushed through the Congress? Torture, a subversion of the Geneva Conventions, and domestic spying. The Administration claims to be spreading democracy throughout the world. How about some democracy and freedom here at home? Shame on this Congress for trampling civil rights at home and abroad. We are supposed to stand up for freedom and liberty and the rights of the most vulnerable. Instead we are spying on Americans? Mr. Speaker, this is not the country our Founding Fathers dreamt of. And it certainly is not the country I want to hand down to my grandchildren. This bill is not making us safer--it is making us less free. I urge my colleagues to stand up for freedom. I urge my colleagues to vote no!
