since the tragedy of September 11, young children are being spit on, called names, harassed, and hurt because they are Muslim or they look like they might be Muslim. State governments and local police need the tools to fight and prosecute these hate crimes. We must elevate the status of hate crimes within Federal law to ensure that the punishment fits the seriousness of the crime. We must set an example for young people that we do not tolerate hate; that they are protected; and that they can feel safe and they will be secure. Now is the time to pass hate crime legislation.
