I believe this bill makes wise investments in our nation's housing and transportation infrastructure needs. For example, the FY11 THUD Appropriations bill will allow HUD to renew all project-based Section 8 rental contracts for a full 12 months. This will help ensure that the nearly 1.3 million low-income families that currently reside in project-based Section 8 housing will not lose their homes. The Committee has also recognized the unique housing needs of some of our most vulnerable Americans, restoring and increasing funding for the Section 811 and Section 202 programs for the elderly and the disabled. The bill provides $85 million in vouchers to get homeless veterans off the streets and it increases funding for Homeless Assistance Block Grants, which provide permanent and transitional housing for homeless families and individuals. In addition to these important housing programs, the bill makes important investments necessary to maintain and expand our nation's transportation infrastructure which is critical to our continuing economic recovery efforts.
