“As a nation, Americans have always valued children and families. If we pass this inadequate, irresponsible bill tonight, we will be breaking from that tradition and turning our backs on America's enduring commitment to fairness and justice. Two weeks ago, I visited the border with a bipartisan group of House and Senate colleagues. There we saw small children as young as seven years old crowded into tiny cells, and forced to sleep on cold concrete floors and benches. What I saw shocked me as a mother and disappointed me as an American. I left that day determined to do everything I could to ensure that these children, many of whom fled horrific violence, are treated with care and compassion.
