“I am very pleased to speak on the importance of doubling funding for the National Institutes of Health. In my judgment, basic biomedical research, funded through the National Institutes of Health, is one of our Nations highest priorities. The work performed by the scientists at the NIH campus, as well as those scientists who are funded by the NIH at our Nation's premier academic institutions and nonprofit organizations, is virtually important. There commitment to battling disease has provided significant hope for the prevention, treatment, and eventual eradication of disease in the future. There is hardly a more vital endeavor. Biomedical research lengthens and improves the quality of life for every American--indeed, for every human on this planet. Our country's continued lead in biomedical research--we are the envy of the world in this regard in both basic and applied research--means higher economic growth and the kind of high-tech, high paying jobs for our children and grandchildren that we want. Indeed, biomedical research is the best investment our Government makes because it pays for itself thousands of times over in terms of health care cost savings.”
