as one who has been a long-long-time supporter of the Hyde amendment, and as one who is most proud to have cast his first legislative vote ever in favor of the gentleman from Illinois as Speaker of the Illinois House, I was very pleased to work with the gentleman and with the gentlewoman from New York [Mrs. Lowey] in attempting to find the common ground that is needed on this amendment. We did that. I commend the gentleman for his unending strong leadership in this area and for what he deeply believes in, and am pleased to support the amendment.
