Mr. Chairman, my colleagues, these two charts show the Salton Sea, in case you think it does not exist. The Salton Sea is this body of water right here in the southeast corner of California. It is about 500 square miles. It is probably one of the largest bodies of inland water outside of the Great Lakes in the United States. It is an artificial lake that was created 90 years ago by the flooding of the Colorado River, and a good lawyer would easily find that the Federal Government was responsible for that flood and for cleaning up the mess that now exists there, which I am going to describe very briefly. The Salton Sea was created, as I said, by the overflow of the Colorado River 90 years ago. It was a fresh water lake to begin with and it had fresh water fish, trout and so on. Over the last 90 days it has become a salt water lake. It is now 50 percent saltier than the ocean.
