Jackie Speier is a former U.S. Representative from California, serving in the House of Representatives from January 3, 2008, until January 15, 2022. A member of the Democratic Party, she represented California's 14th congressional district. Speier is known for her advocacy on issues such as women's rights, healthcare, and gun control. She gained national attention for her work on the Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights and her efforts to address military sexual assault. Speier's political career began in the California State Assembly, where she served from 2002 to 2006 before moving to the U.S. Congress.
I really believe that you want to do the right thing. I also worry that we have not found the formula that is going to reduce the numbers.
In at least 2016, the Academies and DOD considered replacing the measure of unwanted sexual contact used in the Academy survey with the UCMJ-linked measurement used in the active force workplace and gender relations survey.
This isn't a blip, a #MeToo bump, or some accident. It is a clear illustration of a destructive trend and a systemic problem.
Do you have any thoughts on whether it is time for us to make sure that all the academies follow a similar process in terms of the kinds of resources that are available to the victim survivors?
I think one of the biggest problems is, is that leadership hears these numbers but they truly do not internalize them as a problem.
I asked him, have you ever talked to a survivor when it wasn't an adversarial process? And he said, I don't have time for that.

strengthening the antinepotism laws would be a key component if we're trying to clean up the mess that is in the White House right now?
