“the liberals in Congress have reached new heights in demagoguery in the last few months, and with the help of the liberal media and the big special interests, AFL-CIO, they have been able to label anything that Republicans attempt to do as extreme or radical. Mr. Speaker, truth always has a way of rearing its ugly head, and while the liberal Democrats were misleading Americans about the environment and while they were out demagoging about the balanced budget, the Medicare Program has incurred the largest losses in its history. In the first half of this fiscal year Medicare has lost $4.2 billion, and I would just say it has got to be true because I am holding the Santa Barbara News-Press, owned by the New York Times, and here is the front page article from the April 22 issue: 'Medicare Trust Fund Loses $4 Billion. Clinton Administration Downplays Apparent Miscalculations.' So as I said, even the liberal press is exposing that, and I would just say the President vetoed it and now we see his party's inaction on solving and preserving Medicare.”
