Everyone is frustrated with the Forest Service. They don't do enough, they do too little, they are too slow, they are too fast, they don't listen, they are too process-oriented.
Instead of wasting our time exploring radical ideas that won't move in the Senate, we should focus on policies that will make our forests healthier and our constituents safer.
To imagine that the long-standing struggle over the use of our National Forests will somehow disappear if they are turned over to the States is just pure fantasy.
State trust lands were set aside to fund education. National forest lands were set aside to protect watersheds and are required to be managed for many uses, including timber.
I think it is a complication. And this whole discussion about giving it back to the States or something based on a model, it is a huge complication, it is a constitutional complication.
To hand over control of forest lands to States would mean turning our back on this unique relationship.
