Relative to powerplants, let me advise the President there are safety and economic advantages to having 1 central storage facility rather than 80. I think my colleagues would agree on the other side. Throughout the debate, we keep hearing suggestions like: ``Why don't we study the issue some more? Why don't we just leave it at the plant sites?'' which is what is suggested, and ``Why do we have to solve the problem now?'' Well, why should we leave spent fuel at the nuclear power plants in 34 States when there is a less costly storage method with an increased margin of safety in an area that has already been proven for its storage of waste?
