I suggested that S. 1936 was the answer to nuclear waste and that the editorial page of the Washington Post was the answer to parakeet waste. I would not insult parakeets by suggesting that would be a good use of the letter from the Administrator of the EPA or the Chair of the CEQ. The statements made in these letters are inaccurate and simply the shrill hysteria of those who believe that if you repeat a lie often enough, someone might believe you. The administration, sadly, has demonstrated that they are incapable or unwilling to address this issue, and have now resorted to misstatement, mischaracterization, and distortion to prevent Congress from exercising the leadership the administration has abandoned. Far from being an assault on our environmental laws, this legislation reaffirms our commitment to the environment, and the health and safety of the American people.
