On the recordOctober 1, 1998
In the meantime, I want to clarify the Record. The Senator from Montana suggested that the State of Alaska does not support this road. Let me read a statement from the Anchorage Daily News, Wednesday, June 7, 1995. It reads as follows: Knowles-- Who is our Governor-- Says he favors a road to Whittier, a 16-mile link between Nondalton and Itulilik, and a 20-mile road between King Cove and Cold Bay on the Alaskan Peninsula. That was the Anchorage Daily News, Wednesday, June 7, 1995. Relative to another matter that was brought up by my friend on the assessment of transportation needs by the Alaska Department of Transportation, let me read a synopsis, and that is: Based on a comparison with other alternatives, the road alternative provides a positive benefit stream throughout the life of the project with total benefits exceeding total costs by more than $242 million through the year 2018.
