She’s a streetwise, grounded, gorgeous woman, who wants as far as she can to get on with her own life and to protect it.
I will not walk away from Downing Street and am focused on what I was elected to do, which is to serve my country.
In the case of a contest this will ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September.
I will give my successor full and unequivocal support, knowing they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited.
I want to thank the brilliant Number 10 staff and our country’s extraordinary Civil Service who dedicate their lives to public service.
