My message to the Eritrean government is simple: take back your nationals or face a complete ban on your citizens entering the UK.

I would not hesitate to impose further measures on other countries refusing to co-operate.

Eritrea has had every chance to accept the return of criminals and those with no right to be in the UK. Unlike other countries, it has refused.

An attack on any individual in public life is an attack on every one of us, and it is an attack on democracy itself.

Today I also announce an independent root-and-branch review of the protective security provided by the state to those in public life.

I can therefore announce today that I will expand, with immediate effect, police support to political figures who are not currently members of parliament.

We owe it to them and to everyone who believes in a fair and open country to ensure that those who serve at all levels receive the protection they deserve.

And to those cheating the system, your claim will be thrown out, and you will be removed from this country.

To the gangs profiting from this disgraceful fraud: you will be prosecuted, stripped of your dirty money and shut down.

Those faking persecution are beneath contempt and mock real victims who need protection.
