I run for the office of the Presidency in the most difficult time in the life of our country, in many ways the most difficult in a hundred years.

I can assure you that while I do not promise an easy future, I can promise you that the United States will move again.

This is no time for retreat and defeat.

This is one of the top jobs in our national campaign and one to which I am sure Governor Collins will bring his great talents and abilities.

If it is going to move in the direction of freedom, if it is going to move in the direction of the things which we value, then the United States has to lead.

I don't run for the office of the Presidency promising you that if I am elected that life will be easy and the problems all solved

Who can do the job best?

What is needed now is leadership - impartial but firm, deliberate but bold - leadership instead of rhetoric.

The harsh facts of the matter are that our security and leadership are both slipping away from us.

To my mind, it is vital, Mr. Brandt.

My own personal sense of loss is eased by the knowledge that you will be available to help us from time to time in the days ahead.

All of us--America--must stand together, stand strong and be of one mind if we are, from our position of strength, going to lead really on the road of peace.

I hope sincerely that you advance your Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Anderson, to the Governor's chair.

If I am not running the executive part of this Government, then I am the man that is mostly fooled in this Nation.

Your decision can then assure and direct our progress in the years ahead.

I'm doing my best with that; so is this administration

I consider it a privilege that I can here, during this visit, represent my people on that kind of errand.

I can't conceive of anybody better--more equipped--to do this than the Chaplains Corps.
