I believe under new leadership, the kind of leadership which this State has had in recent years, I believe this country can be given leadership, and I believe it can move again, and I ask your help.

In order that we may compete, we need strong leadership at the top and in my judgment only the President of the United States can provide that leadership.

I am delighted to be here, and I am extremely proud that our distinguished former President, President Truman, who has laid the issues out.

I believe the responsibilities which the next President and the next administration will bear are as great as any in our history.

Lyndon Johnson and I run for the office of President and Vice President recognizing that this is a difficult and trying time for us all, that it calls for the best in the American Republic, the best spirit, the best determination, the feeling that the future can belong to us.

I think they should look to us again.

I run for the office of the Presidency in the most difficult time in the life of our country, in many ways the most difficult in a hundred years.

This is no time for retreat and defeat.
