In my transportation message to the Congress, I said, 'America lacks a coordinated transportation system that permits travelers and goods to move conveniently and efficiently' across the country.

The taxes you collect are going to be used to rebuild the cities of America in a manner in which we can take great pride.

Second, to ease the critical water crisis in northern New Jersey, I am directing the Chief of Engineers to install an emergency pump-pipeline system at Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey.

We are prepared to provide an emergency pump pipeline system from the Passaic Lake wells.

I have called for a major effort to beautify our highways and roadsides, and to construct scenic and recreational roads.

The federal-aid highway system is one of the great achievements of this nation.

The new building for the Federal Bureau of Investigation is already being designed in accordance with the plan.

I did not realize--which shows the advantage of getting out of Washington--I did not realize until I began to look up some of the details of O'Hare what an extraordinary effort this has been, the largest airport in the world here in the center of the United States.

On all the great issues which disturb our country, minimum wage, social security, unemployment compensation, houses, roads, schools, hospitals, our parties have divided and we have divided, and the great questions for the 1960's are how is it going to be possible to move this country forward, build its economy, provide employment for its people.

The Democratic Party is firmly committed to the revitalization of our railroads and their restoration to strong position in our economy.

It is no exaggeration to say that the distress of our railroads is one of our most crucial problems.

We will flash the green light for river basin development.

We cannot possibly afford not to make a maximum effort to get fresh water from salt water, if this State and the country is going to move ahead.

At our present rate of urban renewal it will take over 50 years to wipe out the substandard dwellings already in existence - and at the end of that time we will have even more substandard dwellings than we have now.

We need highways badly, very badly, and I am in favor of any forward, constructive step in this field.

Our sons may stay at home, the products of our toil may be used for our schools and our roads and our churches, and not for guns and planes and tanks and ships of war.

We are here today to dedicate a great building of stone and concrete and other materials.

But on top of that, we are interested in getting the entire Pan American Highway completed so that travel north and south is easier.
