As we enter the New Year, we shall reaffirm our determination to secure a world at peace.

They also know what is at stake and are willing to fight and die for it.

I want each of you to walk out in the world determined--determined to move it, to contribute to it, and to shape it-to be leaders and not followers.

I intend to do everything I can to see that the goal is finally reached.

We are determined to do what we think ought to be done there.

If our astronauts can do what they did the other day--spend 8 days in space--we have got enough ingenuity, imagination, and determination here to get the job done with drought and floods.

And we shall overcome, and I am enlisted for the duration.

We just don't intend to be buried.

We know that if our goal is still distant, our course is true.

The security of our alliance is only assured so long as we remain determined and strong and insist on protecting our people and their values.

Well, on this I refuse to turn and run.

Let no one, ally or adversary, ever doubt America's determination to fulfill its role in the alliance, to live up to its obligations.

We will continue to do it.

The pursuit of peace is still the focus of our leadership, our energies, and our determination.

This is no time for retreat and defeat.
