I rise to join my dear friend and fellow Californian Congressman Mike Honda in support of H. Res. 56, commemorating the suffering of the Japanese-American, German-American, and Italian-American communities during World War II by…
Tom Lantos
The Public Record
Tom Lantos was a prominent American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from California's 12th congressional district. A member of the Democratic Party, Lantos was known for his strong advocacy on human rights issues and played a significant role in foreign policy matters during his tenure. He was the only Holocaust survivor to have served in Congress, which deeply influenced his commitment to human rights and humanitarian causes. Lantos served in Congress from 1981 until his retirement in 2008, when he chose not to seek re-election due to health issues. His legacy includes efforts to address global human rights abuses and to promote democracy around the world.
I wish to end my part in this great debate as I began in tribute to the patriotism of every Member of this body and with special thanks to my dear friend and distinguished counterpart on the Republican side, the gentleman from Illinois…
I appreciate the views of my colleague from California and I share her view that we must exhaust all diplomatic and peaceful means for disarming Saddam Hussein, and we all agree that war can be only our very last resort. Indeed, Mr…
I believe, however, that the amendment would weaken the hand of our Secretary of State in international negotiations that are occurring as we speak. Every Member of this body prefers a diplomatic and peaceful solution. Every Member of this…
I do not agree that a decision should be made now. We do not know whether the allotted time is sufficient or not. If the allotted time is not sufficient, I can assure the gentleman I will not change my mind and I will request an extension…
I rise in support of H.R. 5531--the Sudan Peace Act. I do so with some disappointment. The bill we consider today transmitted from the other body was stripped of its most potent provisions--full disclosure requirement and potential capital…
My legislation adds about 5,000 acres to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The beauty of this region is beyond description. A person's soul will sore when they see it. It is stunning panoramic scenery containing flora and…
Mr. Speaker, this has been a fine moment for the House of Representatives. We came together, not as Republicans or as Democrats, but as American citizens who are still so painfully aware of that horrible moment a year ago when lives were…
I fully support the conference report and urge all my colleagues to support this critical legislation. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to address a very important provision that is contained in this legislation, section 603 of the Supplemental…
Mr. Speaker, as the only survivor of the Holocaust ever elected to the Congress of the United States, I want to commend the gentleman from New York (Mr. Crowley), a valued member of our committee, for his outstanding resolution and for his…
It is literally unthinkable that just 50 years after the Holocaust this body should be compelled to take up this issue. It speaks very poorly of the educational process that has unfolded in Europe in the last two generations, that this…
I commend the President's speech on the Middle East, and I strongly support his vision. In calling for new Palestinian leadership and democratic reforms, the President has announced the end of the Arafat era. Never has an end been so…
