Mr. Putin clearly wants to get Ukraine within the Russian sphere of influence. He does not want Ukraine to affiliate with the European Union. Obviously, he doesn't want it to affiliate with NATO.

He doesn't want Ukraine to be a thriving democracy that would set an example that some people in Russia might notice and say, why there, not here?

This is not foreign policy. These are acts of aggression against individuals.

I hope he's right, but I'm profoundly skeptical.
