“I thank my colleague from Oregon for yielding. The bipartisan highway conference compromise before us is just that, a compromise. But, despite its faults, I will support it. While this bill adequately funds our Nation's long-term highway infrastructure needs, which our communities desperately need, it does fall short of making the robust long-term investments our crumbling infrastructure truly needs. I am pleased the bill does take an important step to protect consumers by prohibiting companies from renting or loaning out dangerously recalled vehicles for the first time. I have spearheaded this effort for years in honor of Raechel and Jacqueline Houck, two young sisters who were killed by their rented vehicle that was under recall. To be clear, this is an important step for consumer safety. But I am disappointed that, during conference, companies with fewer than 35 rental or loaner vehicles were exempted. Unfortunately, by our bowing to special interests, some consumers will still be at risk. The SPEAKER pro tempore. The time of the gentlewoman has expired. Mr. DeFAZIO.
