It’s because our future is literally on the line and we must be unapologetic of fighting for the future.

These are dark days, but you’re all here for the same reason I left that prestigious law firm to go to the defender’s office years ago.

Oh, absolutely not. I’m always going to be part of the fight.

We need to pass a new ban.

I will never stop fighting to make our country reflect the very best of its ideals, always on behalf of the people.

I believe there's value in sharing what I saw, what I learned, and what I know it will take to move forward.

With candor and reflection, I've written a behind-the-scenes account of that journey.

It was intense, high stakes and deeply personal for me and for so many of you.

I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans.

I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.

In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor.

In writing this book, one truth kept coming back to me. Sometimes the fight takes a while, but I remain full of hope and I remain clear-eyed. I will never stop to make our country reflect the very best of its ideals.

And We, the People, must use our power to fight for freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all.

We must recognize that our politics, our government, and our institutions have too often failed the American people, culminating in this moment of crisis.

For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office.

In the United States of America, power must lie with the people. And We, the People must use our power to fight for freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all.

I am a devout public servant, and from the earliest days of my career, I have believed that the best way I could make a difference in people's lives and fight for a better future was to improve the system from within.
