On the recordDecember 7, 2006
I am pleased that the Food and Drug Administration will finally have a confirmed Commissioner. And I am glad that the President's nominee, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, has acted to address concerns that have been raised about his nomination. He addressed conflict-of-interest concerns by resigning his position as head of the National Cancer Institute. The FDA also approved access to emergency contraception without a prescription. This decision should have been made when the FDA's expert panel recommended it, and I was disappointed at the shameless politicizing of science over emergency contraception. With those issues now resolved, I will vote for his nomination.
