I supported the amendment offered by the junior Senator from Arizona, Mr. Kyl. I did so even though I support the underlying policy that amendment sought to strike from the bill, namely the alternative fuels vehicle tax credit. I regret, though, that this provision, along with many other tax provisions in the bill, were included without adequate offsetting savings. The result is a measure that will make our budget deficits even larger. We must return to the fiscally responsible budgeting that was so beneficial to the economy, and which brought our budget, however briefly, to balance, and even a slight surplus. If Congress does not pay for additional tax cuts, we will only make matters worse.
