I would argue the DRL's work has never been more important than it is right now, with democracy going head to head with the growing threats of kleptocracy and authoritarianism around the globe.

I would hope that the Kamala will use this as an opportunity to raise the obvious point that this country is deeply infected with racial injustice.

You may apply a legal standard to whether or not you should recuse yourself, but it's her decision. There's no appeal from it. She's not mandated to do it or not do it.
