“Mr. President, it is truly a pleasure to be here on the floor with my friend and colleague and fellow campaign finance reformer from Arizona, the senior Senator, Mr. McCain, as well as our other colleagues who join with us today, including the junior Senator from Maine, Senator Collins, and shortly expected the senior Senator from Michigan, Mr. Levin, and, of course, my good friend, the junior Senator from Georgia, Mr. Cleland. We are all among a group of 33 Members of this body who have already cosponsored the McCain-Feingold legislation. As the Senator from Arizona said, we are here today to announce that we will be seeking consideration of bipartisan campaign finance reform legislation during the month of September. We will continue our discussions, as the Senator from Arizona indicated, with the majority leader. And I am hopeful that we will be able to reach a compromise that will allow us to have an open public debate on this issue, and allow all Senators the opportunity to participate in offering amendments to our proposal.”
