I am concerned about the President's plan to spend $100 million to target low-income families and possibly deny them this critical tax credit.

We are not hearing from anybody. And I do think they need to talk to the airports and to the unemployed workers, as well.

The Administration's position on the FSC/ETI issue is a job killer for my home State of Washington and the Nation...

In the long run. Will they be implemented on the same schedule?

Can you be more specific about what other things you are going to do in order to comply with the amount of money that you have if you do not do furloughs?

Certainly the Administration would have sympathy for that.

the President is pushing for tax cuts that overwhelmingly favor our wealthiest citizens.

I don't understand how the use of money to advertise in this is going to help outreach to poor families.

I would just say that if we do pre-certification and confuse people even more, then we are doing a real disservice to people who actually should be getting the EITC for very good reasons that we have set out before.

I hope we will call this hearing every year to continue to aggressively monitor the progress of the Department of Transportation in reducing the number of accidents and fatalities on our highways.

Will you look at the minority report?

Well, I am deeply concerned about that.

I know you are an educator. And you cannot believe that it makes sense to transfer students to schools that are overcrowded even to the point of causing health and safety concerns.

That makes it difficult for us, as we try and manage this.

I hope that you take a look at that, because there is a lot of disagreement on that.

I am very disconcerted by the President's budget.

Do you not agree that fulfilling that kind of mandate will require significant investments in training and recruiting and retaining and testing teachers?

I find the President's budget to have serious shortfalls.

I would just encourage you to stay in close touch with our families here who are watching news reports with a great deal of anxiety.

But you are not going to give us a formal request of any kind so that we know how the President wants to set these priorities?

With all due respect, let me just tell you that when we worked on the No Child Left Behind, the authorization for this requirement and this money were under the Teacher Quality State Grants.

When we wrote the No Child Left Behind, the teacher quality money was under the Teacher Quality State Grants.

I think we are all very disturbed by the images of the prisoner of war (POWs), and I know their families here in this country are really--there is a lot of anxiety.

I hope that you look at the language of the minority report.
