the American people pay by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. As a result, one out of four Americans cannot afford the prescriptions that their doctors write, and thousands die every year as a result, and many become sicker than they should. During his State of the Union Address, President Trump asked us to codify a most-favored-nation drug policy to ensure that the American people pay no more for prescription drugs than people in other countries. Well, the amendment that I am offering now calls on Congress to do exactly that. This amendment is very simple. It would prevent pharmaceutical companies from charging more for prescription drugs in the United States than they do in Canada, the UK, Germany, France, and Japan. Researchers at Yale University estimate that this bill would cut the cost of prescription drugs in America by half--a 50-percent reduction-- so we are not paying the highest prices in the world.
