“I happen to have been with a delegation that visited Central America. I saw the faces of the men, women and children that had been devastated by Hurricane Mitch. Part of the process and part of the obligation that we face in this House is to maintain a focus on the issues that are important and to maintain in priority the things that merit attention. Part of the process is respecting the fact that we, as leaders in the world and leaders in this hemisphere, have an obligation to help those in need. It has been almost 6 months since the devastation in Central America; 6 months where people have been without the basic essentials that sometimes most of us take for granted; 6 months that we have been sitting and doing nothing on their behalf. I think we can do better. I think we as Americans have an obligation to help those people in Central America.”
