Mr. Speaker, it is great to be here with you this evening and to talk about a very important topic. Before I get into the topic of this hour, it is with great honor that I rise today to coanchor this CBC Special Order hour with my dear friend, Delegate Stacey Plaskett from the Virgin Islands, and also acknowledge our CBC chair, the Honorable Cedric Richmond from the great State of Louisiana. For the next 60 minutes, we have a chance to speak directly to the American people on issues of grea importance to the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congress, the constituents that we represent, and all Americans on this very important issue of voter suppression. Before I go into my remarks, Mr. Speaker, we do have some colleagues here that would like to also speak about this very timely and important topic. There have been many developments that have occurred over the last week dealing with commissions that are being formed out of the White House to help aid in voter suppression and other things that have been very troubling. So I am going to ask for the first speaker to rise, and that would be my colleague, also from the great State of Texas, from Harris County and the city of Houston, the Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee, who has been very thoughtful and been a great voice on expanding the rights to vote of all Americans.
