I worked with the chairman and the chairman of the House Commerce Justice State Appropriations Committee during the supplemental appropriations conference to craft report language that requires the Department of Commerce to take into account a very important forthcoming GAO study which analyzes the cost of maintaining four National Weather Service regional headquarters offices in the continental United States versus consolidation into three offices by closure of the Southern Region Headquarters office. The language requires the Department of Commerce to take this report into account. It is my wish that it will cease its efforts to close the office now so that it may take the report into consideration, as this language requires them to do. I want to ensure that this legislative history will be carried forward with the Senate's supplemental appropriations bill.
