Current law authorizes direct broadcast satellite operators, such as DirecTV and EchoStar, to provide the signals of distant broadcast network stations to a consumer who cannot receive an over-the-air signal from the local network stations. The Communications Act exempts satellite operators from having to obtain consent from a distant broadcaster to carry the signal into the local market. That exemption expires at the end of this year.
