As Attorney General, Judge Mukasey will lead the Justice Department as it works to protect the American people.

Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator who was a threat to his own people and the world, and it was the right thing to do.

I thank the Senate for its bipartisan vote confirming Judge Michael Mukasey as the Nation's 81st Attorney General.

We are also waiting to get reports back from Solana and Mr. ElBaradei later on this month.

Our position is clear to him and to everyone in Pakistan.

Laura and I are thrilled to welcome the Chancellor and Professor Sauer here to our place.

Judge Mukasey is a man of strong character and integrity, with exceptional legal judgment.

We join the people of Pakistan in their continued concern about the state of emergency and curtailment of basic freedoms.

We're looking forward to having constructive talks as well as a chance to relax and visit.

Free and fair elections require the lifting of the state of emergency.

I look forward to working with the Senate to fill the other senior leadership positions at the Justice Department.

The ultimate goal is not to punish the people of Pakistan; it's to help them get back on a path to democracy.
