George H.W. Bush was the 41st President of the United States, serving from January 20, 1989, to January 20, 1993. A member of the Republican Party, he previously held the office of Vice President under Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989. Bush was a World War II veteran and served in various roles within the U.S. government, including as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1976 to 1977. His presidency is noted for significant events such as the Gulf War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, as well as his efforts in foreign policy and international diplomacy.
At a time when our international position in certain key industries is being challenged, we face impending shortfalls of qualified scientists and engineers.
You are the pioneers in what will be a continuing effort to honor the achievement of this nation's many outstanding schoolteachers.
We must also make American students the first in the world in science and math by the year 2000.
The real rewards are the students who will remember you and what you have done for them for the rest of their lives.
I am looking forward to my visit to Chile during my South America trip later this fall.
This budget agreement is our last, best chance to get the Federal budget deficit under control.
But a sound working relationship with China is still necessary so that issues of vital concern to us can be addressed.
