I thank the gentlewoman. And still I rise, Mr. Speaker. And still I rise to pay tribute to the Honorable Eddie Bernice Johnson, the first lady of Texas politics. Yes, she has given new meaning to the name first lady, as the gentlewoman from Texas was the first Black woman ever elected to public office from Dallas. She was the first woman in Texas history to chair a major Texas House committee, the Labor Committee. Yes, she was the first African-American woman to hold the position of regional director for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. She was the first registered nurse elected to the United States Congress. She was the first Black person from Dallas to serve in Congress. Yes, she was a first. She was the first woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Mr. Speaker. She was a history-making, glass-ceiling-breaking first lady who blazed huge trails in the sands of time, such that those who may traverse later will know that, where she was the first, she will not be the last.
