I spoke briefly last night of the sorrow we all felt on hearing that our former colleague, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, passed away. This afternoon, I join with Senators Schumer, Clinton, Kennedy, Dodd, and others to return to the floor to say a bit more for the record about this truly remarkable man and about how much the Senate and the Nation will miss him. Opening this morning's newspapers at a time when news of the war in Iraq seems to eclipse all else, I found it fitting that Daniel Patrick Moynihan was--as he was so often during his long public career--once again front page news. Newspapers across the nation--and indeed, around the world--are filled today with accounts of Senator Moynihan's life and work. What has been written in just the short time since his death yesterday afternoon reminds us how extraordinary pat Moynihan really was.…
