On the recordFebruary 24, 2004
I will make a prediction that we will notice a special twinkle in Senator Byrd's eye as we visit with him this afternoon. There is good reason. Actually, there are two very good reasons. In the last month, Senator Byrd became a great-grandfather for the fourth and fifth times. Hannah Byrd Clarkson was born 4 weeks ago today, on January 27, weighing 10 pounds 3 ounces. Hannah is the second child of another member of our Senate family, Mary Anne Clarkson, of the Bill Clerk's Office, and her husband James Clarkson. She joins her older sister Emma. Hannah's cousin, Michael Yew Fatemi, was born on February 11. Michael is Senator Byrd's fifth great-grandchild, and his first great-grandson. He is named in honor of his uncle John Michael Moore, Senator Byrd's beloved grandson, who died in a car accident. Few people live long enough to see and hold even one of their great-grandchildren. To be able to welcome five of them into the world is a rare blessing, indeed.
