It is a testimony to exactly those attributes that we have had Medicare for 37 years and never, never has it been proposed that we add an assets test to people's ability to secure the basic necessities of health care that sustain life and the quality of life. The Senator mentioned a number of items that would be lost, from a wedding ring to a burial plot. I think of particular significance is the fact that you can't own a car that has a value of more than $4,500.
