“I am very pleased to help recognize Senator Ted Stevens as the longest-serving Republican in the history of the U.S. Senate. Senator Stevens has represented the Last Frontier for nearly 40 years, during which he has become one of the most respected lawmakers and gentlemen in Congress. For a large majority of his time in Congress, Senator Stevens served with my predecessor, the late Senator Strom Thurmond, the Senate's previous longest-serving Republican. Now that the record is broken, I am certain Senator Thurmond would be pleased to know his good friend, Ted Stevens, will carry on the great tradition of service to our Nation. I am honored to serve alongside Senator Stevens and congratulate him on this momentous occasion.”
