That policy has not been effectively implemented, as exemplified by the Los Alamos fire. In order to protect communities from wildland fires, it is essential that the agencies collaborate with State and local officials in communities to identify where the areas of high risk are and plan appropriate mitigation. These steps must be taken before agencies use prescribed fire in these high risk areas so that the State and local entities are informed of the risk and prepared to take action if needed.
