“I would tell my friend from Wisconsin, if I was fighting in combat, I would want to fight against the best MiG driver there is; and as a political opponent and a friend, I think we have fought against one of the best MiG drivers here on the floor tonight, and I salute the gentleman. I would just like to answer, and I do not think they will be controversial, two questions real quick. The gentleman from Texas (Mr. Edwards) asked how can we increase the debt. If you inherit a debt that is $5 trillion and you nearly spend $1 billion a day on just the interest of the debt, it grows. You can pay down $490 billion; but if it grows over the years, over $1 billion a day, it is going to get bigger. The other thing I would say is to my friend, the gentleman from California (Mr. George Miller), whom I am very proud of as a colleague in California, who worked on the education bill, but I would ask him to take a look at what Governor Gray Davis is doing to education in California where every single district is being cut millions of dollars because of the energy crisis that was mismanaged.”
