There has been recent discussion about implementing stop-and-frisk in cities to address crime even at the national level.

I introduced a piece of legislation called the Unlawful Gun Buyer Alert Act to get at this issue of a default process.

As more Americans lose their lives to senseless gun violence, this Congress has been absolutely silent and inactive on this issue.

I want to acknowledge the extraordinary, prompt, and effective response to the recent bombings in New Jersey and New York.

It seems to me that we that ought to be doing everything we can to surface all of the trafficking that exists in the United States.

Despite sustained anti-trafficking efforts, millions of individuals are bound by mental, physical and financial coercion and manipulation by traffickers who exploit their vulnerabilities for profit.

If the basic human rights of people for simply being who they are makes them targets in the United States, sadly, serious and sometimes deadly human rights abuses exist in nations all over the world.

What has set us apart from other nations for more than 200 years is our dedication to fundamental freedoms, equality, and universal values.

Human rights form the most fundamental basis of our democracy.
