I ran for office and got involved in public life because of drug use in my hometown and my county. I come from a town that was one of our most distressed communities in Pennsylvania. I was born and raised, the youngest of nine children, there, was active in the community a number of ways, including the volunteer fire company and the Red Cross and the Boy Scout troop, and was upset because our town had become the national headquarters of one of the five largest motorcycle gangs in America. That gang controlled all the drug trafficking along the east coast of this country. They had 65 members living there, and the national president lives there and because we were just a small town, we had no resources of coping with the problem of drug abuse.
